Nacogdoches Main Street celebrated it's tenth anniversary in 2008. With over 3 million dollars reinvested into the downtown district during that time. Nacogdoches Main Street is part of the Texas Historical Commission's Texas Main Street Program. The THC's Texas Main Street Program is a revitalization program for historic downtown and neighborhood commercial districts. It is based on the national program's Four-Point® approach of organization, design, promotion and economic restructuring, all within the context of historic preservation. Since its inception in 1981, the Texas Main Street Program has worked with more than 140 cities across the state. The program has stimulated more than $1.3 billion in private sector downtown reinvestment; helped retain, expand or recruit more than 6,000 businesses, and created more than 23,000 new jobs in Texas.
What is Main Street?
Nacogdoches Main Street celebrated it's tenth anniversary in 2008. With over 3 million dollars reinvested into the downtown district during that time. Main Street is a national program born out of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Since 1980, the National Main Street Center has been working with communities across the nation to revitalize historic commercial areas. Based in historic preservation, the Main Street approach was developed to save historic commercial architecture, but has become a powerful economic development tool as well. The Main Street program is designed to improve all aspects of the downtown, producing both tangible and intangible benefits. Improving economic management, strengthening public participation, and marketing downtown as a fun place to visit is as critical to Main Street's future as recruiting new businesses, and rehabilitating buildings. Building on downtown's inherent assets -- rich architecture, personal service, and traditional values and most of all, a sense of place -- the Main Street approach supports entrepreneurship, downtown cooperation and civic concern. It has earned national recognition as a practical strategy appropriately scaled to local resources and conditions. And because it is a locally driven program, all initiatives stem from local issues and concerns.
What does the Main Street Manager do?
Often property owners, merchants, and sponsors anticipate Main Street staff devoting the majority of its time and resources to event planning. In the Main Street approach, events and festivals are only a limited way to influence economic development. Because of this the staff’s charge is actually much broader and includes advancing efforts that effect:
· Design - the physical infrastructure of downtown;
· Organization - fundraising and public awareness;
· Marketing/Promotion - downtown image development;
· Economic redevelopment - business recruitment and retention
Who are our Constituents?
The Main Street staff answers to many supervisors and constituency groups. Primarily, the City of Nacogdoches, the Main Street Advisory Board, and the Texas Historical Commission oversee the development of Main Street’s annual work plan and review the level of success in achieving priority objectives.
Additionally, the Main Street board and staff work among several other constituency groups that have similar goals in common. Those include the Downtown Business Association, the Nacogdoches Convention & Visitors Bureau, the Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce, and the Nacogdoches Economic Development Corporation.
Vision
We envision Historic Downtown Nacogdoches as a year round destination where visitors and locals experience the heart of our community rich with history, commerce, entertainment, cultural, and educational opportunities.
Mission
