May 14th 2011 General Election Information
On Saturday, May 14 2011, the citizens of Nacogdoches will elect three members to the Nacogdoches City Council. Those positions are Northwest Ward Councilmember, Northeast Ward Councilmember, and Mayor. Candidates must live within the single member district they wish to represent at least 6 months prior to Election Day. Candidates for the Mayor position must live in the City limits of Nacogdoches at least 1 year prior to Election Day.
CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS
To run for City Council you must: 1) be at least 18 years old; 2) be a resident of the city for one year preceding the date of the election for the At Large position, and for six (6) months preceding the date of the election for the single ward positions; 3) be a registered voter of the city; 4) not hold any other public office for which you receive compensation; 5) not be indebted to the city; 6) not have been determined mentally incompetent by a final judgment of a court; 7) not have been finally convicted of a felony from which you have not been pardoned or otherwise released from the resulting disabilities.
APPLICATION FOR A PLACE ON THE BALLOT
Applications for a place on the ballot will be accepted by the City Secretary. Application packets are available in the City Secretary’s office during normal business hours. Each candidate must submit the Application for a Place on the Ballot, Charter Compliance Statement and Appointment of Campaign Treasurer.
CAMPAIGN TREASURER APPOINTMENT
You must file the Appointment of Campaign Treasurer prior to accepting or receiving any campaign funds. The Texas Election Code defines candidate as “a person who knowingly and willingly takes affirmative action for the purpose of gaining nomination or election to public office or for the purpose of satisfying financial obligations incurred by the person in connection with the campaign for nomination or election.” A person becomes a candidate when a public announcement or statement is made of an intent to run for office, soliciting support by letter or other mode of communication, accepting campaign contributions or making campaign expenditures, or an application is filed for a place on the ballot.

To be eligible to vote in the November election you must have a current voter registration application on file at the Nacogdoches County Elections office no later than 30 days prior to election day0. SPECIAL CONDITIONS

CAMPAIGN REPORTS
The Texas Ethics Commission enforces the Campaign Finance requirements for candidates and officeholders. In most cases, there are two (2) campaign reports due prior to the election, and semi-annual reports due after the election. ELECTION DAY VOTING
All general city elections are held the second Saturday of November and are held at the TJR Elementary School, 411 N. Mound Street.. Polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO VOTE?
Voters must present some form if identification in order to vote. To provide more efficient processing, please bring one of the following:
§ Current voter registration certificate
§ A drivers license or personal identification card issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety or similar documents from other states;
§ A form of photo ID that establishes a person’s identify (such as an employee identification card)
§ A birth certificate or other document confirming birth that is admissible in a court of law and establishes a person’s identify
§ U.S. citizenship papers
§ A United States passport
§ Official mail addressed to the person by name from a governmental agency
§ A copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck or other government document that shows the name and address of the voter
ELECTION RESULTS
After the polls are closed and the ballots have been counted UNOFFICIAL election results will be available on the city’s website or by calling 936-559-2504. The election results will not become official until the election is canvassed by the City Commission at a meeting following the election. |
